About this song
Stomp, stomp, stomp! Who’s that swaying through the tall savanna grass with giant ears and a trunk that reaches all the way to the ground? It’s the big friendly elephant, and this elephant song for kids is all about him!
In this animal song for toddlers and preschoolers, little ones meet the largest animal on land up close. They watch him take slow, heavy steps through the golden grass, lift his trunk high and swing it low, pick things up from the ground and flap his huge ears to cool down when the sun gets hot. Singing along, children find out what an elephant uses his trunk and ears for — and the cheerful chorus gets them on their feet to march step by step, arms up and down like a trunk.
What we learn about the elephant
- he lives in the savanna, among tall grass and trees
- his trunk helps him grab, lift and twist things
- his big ears keep him cool on hot days
- he walks slowly, heavily and with a gentle sway
Lyrics – Elephant Song – Trunk Up, Trunk Down!
The big elephant comes swaying by,
With giant ears that flap up high,
His long trunk reaches high and low,
Through the savanna, calm and slow.
Trop, trop, trop, elephant so strong,
Trunk up, trunk down, come march along!
Trop, trop, trop, come follow him,
Step by step, we walk like him!
Who has a trunk that hangs down low?
Who takes big steps as he goes slow?
Who flaps his ears and sways like that?
It is, it is, the elephant!
Trop, trop, trop, elephant so strong,
Trunk up, trunk down, come march along!
Trop, trop, trop, come follow him,
Step by step, we walk like him!
With his trunk he picks things from the ground,
Then lifts them up and waves them round,
He stretches it out, then turns with care,
His trunk can help him everywhere.
Trop, trop, trop, elephant so strong,
Trunk up, trunk down, come march along!
Trop, trop, trop, come follow him,
Step by step, we walk like him!
When it’s hot beneath the sun,
Do you know what can be done?
He flaps his ears, slow and wide,
To feel the cool breeze by his side.
Trop, trop, trop, elephant so strong,
Trunk up, trunk down, come march along!
Trop, trop, trop, come follow him,
Step by step, we walk like him!
